Once AAA teams are picked in the fall, the OHF will be announcing Open Borders in Ontario for 2025/26 season. All levels all age groups. Play where you want is coming.
No more residential transfers, no more waivers, no more releases. Its coming.
I am the OP on of this thread... Just to give context i have been right about everything I post ( I could provide a list if you like), i dont post lightly. Again you heard it here first. Open borders has been decided. Its coming at all levels U10 and above. They cannot open U9 due to some HC regulations with the pathway at least not yet, walk before you can run. I can also say full ice is coming as well but not until next season. Buckle up, there is one more change but not ready to announce it yet and will effect AAA in a good way IMO
[/quo

FOR U9 next year, if the kids played already with your team for MD or Select they can be granfathered in back to their team. The association can also say no to this. it will take about 3 year for this rule to adapt for U7, U8 and U9... The idea will be to promote not driving 1.5 hours for 1 game for U9, U8 and U7 still....

Associations are starting to post responses to the new open borders policy. Oakville has an entire webpage devoted to convincing players to stay there - but also for players to join them from elsewhere. Newmarket and Cambridge have stated they are committed to "hometown hockey" and will be limiting the number of non-local players (which is still possible - but you can't prevent anyone from leaving). Whitby says it will consider limits on a team by team basis. No doubt some will have no limits.

What's interesting is that only the "outgoing / free to leave" part of the open borders policy will be implemented consistently. The "incoming" part of the policy will change depending on what each Association decides, which will put caps on the outgoing part if the demand for movement is greater than the number of spots available.

Now, the club’s aggressive response to the opportunities Open Borders presents is going to make Oakville a very popular destination at U10. If you are an Oakville player who leaves for Klevr from this point onward, you will not be eligible for an Oakville Rangers roster spot at U10 AAA or AA. If your child aspires to play AAA or AA in Oakville at U10 and/or beyond,

Oakville not open for Klevr kids apparently.

Associations can still have import rules if they decide to do so. They will not be able to deny releases any longer.

Guest wrote: Fri Dec 13, 2024 3:40 pm Just emailed the OHF asking about open borders for u9 and up. the response I got within 5 hours was as follows "Details will be released next week". Sure sounds like this is maybe legitimate. About time these boards are going to be held accountable for picking their beer drinking buddies kids over kids with more talent.
Yep, I called as well. Was told prob announced on Tuesday. Full open borders for all.
