OHF Opening borders??

As of the open borders policy all previous import rules are out the window. There is no such thing as imports any longer. As we stand today there are no caps either. Some pegs may decide to add caps based on boundary but likely not to happen.

Pretty much covered it. What is a tryout passport though?
Many OMHA teams require you buy a tryout passport for say $200 that covers you kid trying out for AAA, AA, A, B
Even if you only want to attend a B tryout you need to pay the entire fee.

GTHL teams only collect say $20 for the tryout skate when you show up.

- try and host all tryouts on the same day as their direct competitor org's, thus making it very hard to shop orgs
- will all have import caps, that any board member can approve an override of
- once 1 org bypasses the import rules, all gloves and the org's nearby will toss the rule out the window
- OMHA org's will raise prices within 3 seasons (significantly) - they need all this extra to stay competitive
- require you to buy a tryout passport, weeks before tryouts start; so you need to tryout for 3 orgs, 3 passports
- ensure programs are 12 months a year; spring, summer; winter

Coaches will:
- have teams picked already in Dec
- fill the last bottom 3 spots on the team with the highest bidder
- will drive new trucks leased for the year by a bottom 1/2 players parent
- decommit/cut at tryouts that one kid to replace them with a new money man; that kid will be in tears and will scramble to find a spot to play
- be at rinks every night all over the area looking at players; send the money man to find the parents and recruit the kids they want
- confirm kids are 12 month players and not doing other sports; no cottage; not vacations

Parents will:
- decommit at the last moment
- blast team and coaches once they find out their kid is not returning
- want hockey 12 months a year
- complain hockey is often
- complain prices have skyrocketed
- remind everyone that there are no kids from their kids school/area that are on the team

Please someone help keep the list going!
Oh but they're going to enforce no tampering!!!!

All the orgs are meeting next month to make decision on import quota. If the limit is not increased and stays at 4 for AAA the open borders policy removes all the paperwork required but will not truly allow the benefit of open borders.

It will only be that the top players in each age group wanting to play outside their org can choose to do so if they wish.

I’ve heard there will be no caps on how many non resident players play on a team but above posters say there will be caps. What’s the truth?

There is no cap from OHF. Organizations can create internal rules on how many imports to take, and then use the subsidized ice as a reason. However, it is going to depend on the board and more specifically, how many board members’ kids are on the bubble for their existing team…

In our area, it seems the board won’t be setting any limits because they want the $$$ and it will significantly strengthen our teams. Especially at the lower levels where some of the weaker kids on higher level teams should be playing.

Guest wrote: Fri Dec 27, 2024 1:12 pm GTHL as far as I recall does not really use city run rinks except maybe the MM. the old import definition and cap no longer applies. The orgs will either set new rules and caps or just keep it open. OMHA might cap from what I understand.
I don’t think the GTHL has to worry about any teams taking on too many imports 🤣
The best players are already in their league

Local article and Oakville states that the Oakville Rangers are not too happy because kids from Oakville will go to Barrie to play. That’s quite funny but they also stated that there will be no caps/limits.

Typical of the Oakville president, he pushed for unlimited imports at AAA a few years ago and got what he wanted. To the point that the 2008 AAA team from 2 years ago had 10 imports to 7 local kids. The guy can’t decide if hometown hockey is what he wants or freedom of movement.
