Brah, there's no DEI policy for minor hockey coaches. Even if there were, it wouldn't make any sense.
You realize that technically there is no "boys" hockey right. Woild that mean that 50% of coaches should automatically be female because it's a co-ed organization?
Then you would have the completely illegal and non inclusive "female" hockey, which literally bans players based on their Not Allowed. Why does it go only one way, and is acceptable? Is this archaic thinking from 25 years ago brah?
This is incredible...in a very bad way.

Why is MHT censoring what people write here.
Re: Coaches leaving game in droves
Coaches are leaving because:
1 Spring/summer hockey- player plays on a team his parents pay for, and he might not be capable of playing on. He comes back to his winter team and he and his parents now think he is elite, and they find out differently when the coach does not play him where they think he should be and tell everyone that will listen the coach does not know what he is doing or plays favorites.
2 Skill Coaches- little johnny goes to a skating coach, a shooting coach all summer and his parents spend all kinds of money. He goes back to his winter team expecting to have moved up the lineup because we spent so much money at summer camps Johnny must have improved, Parents forget that others improve also. Skill coaches teach motor skills not the game. The coach teaches the game and Johnny has skill but does not compete. The winter coach points that out and he is wrong because his skill coaches tell the players and the parent he is improving every session. Why so he pays for more sessions. The winter coach has a whole team to look after not just Johnny.

simple fix, open closed centres, let people chose where they want to play. If the team coach is worth his salt, people will want their kid to play for him, and chose so freely

Coaches are leaving because:
3 Associations do not hire the right people. Most associations have no hockey people making the selections. They assume because the coach's teams have won games or titles he is a good coach. The players win games or titles the coach manages the personal he has.
4 Jealousy- Parents and players are often so jealous of other people's success that it clouds their vision. This is when parents say the coach plays favorites. Most coaches play the players they trust to play the game the coach wants played or in his opinion have the talent to change the game at the time he wants them on the ice. They are favorites because they are better in the coaches opinion.
5 Control- Parents have to give control of their athlete to the coach and this causes huge conflict because the vision of the coach and the vision of the coach about the athlete are not the same.
6-Parents- Most parents see their athlete as great (as they should) the coach sees the same athlete with flaws that need to be fixed and hidden during games till they get fixed if they can be fixed. This causes a huge divide. Most parents would not rate their athlete in the bottom have of the team. All would be a top six Forword or a top 4 D-man. The coach sees others ahead of the parents' athlete. Some by a little some by a lot.

Coaches are leaving because:
7- Communication- Coaches seldom inform parents of their plan. This becomes an issue because the parents do not know what is going on now or the near future. This is by far the biggest issue.

They are all moving to become younger, more diverse, gender equal, hockey experienced Boards. The model is the same .. Coach, Asst Coach, Manager and Trainer. The Board staffs teams accordingly with volunteers. They will always get volunteers as teams understand, no staff means no Team. The big difference is the Board today will be aligned with Coach team to be ruthless around Costs. It as much about affordability of Hockey as it is about development. Budgets of a AAA team should be X and at 5% index to say a AA team .. 5% index to an A team etc. All budgets, not for profit, volunteer based, minimal swag, org discounted ice, x hours of ice in a year. You get the idea. After costs, clear outline of how team operates with ice time and development. Clearly leadership has taken hockey to have to uncompetitive divisions, misaligned team budgets across organizations and even within a single organization, players freedom to do extra skates, promotion of spring/summer hockey. This is all leading to extra costs and inconsistent development across minor hockey. This needs to change and will!
Do they need to be??
Nope. Take the best person for the position

Agreed that there can be BS on the coach section, but using EDI to determine who gets it is even worse.
