Goaltender Incentives

Does your association have goalie incentives at early ages?

I see all around that goaltenders are needed, or some are not great.

Should associations lower the registration fees to encourage more kids to become goalies? With the understanding they need to play at least a certain amount of season in net?

Some parents put their kid in net because their kid is not a strong skater, but goalies should be some of the best on team in relation to balance, mobility. Etc.

Thoughts?

Yes, lots of teams do. But, I'm sure some teams don't.

My kids U8 and U9 teams both have given us a goalie budget for goalie training all season. So, essentially we pay $2k less than other players on the team and the expectation is we take that money and spend it on goalie training. Which we do. That amount usually gets us through most of the season going weekly.

Other teams, instead of giving you the money will pay for you to goto whatever goalie training place they pick out for you, once a week or once every other week.

Some teams will bring in a goalie trainer for your practices weekly, etc.

I've heard of a handful of teams where the goalie plays for free for the season, which is great, but I don't know how common it is.

Very few teams do nothing at this point. If they do nothing, it's not a good look and it's honestly a bad idea. You need to invest in your goalie.

Our association has been told through the local hockey council that no one is allowed to offer any discounts to goalies.

Within the associations, they do offer goalie training for $10 per session.

The house leagues / local leagues can't keep goalie because they are constantly being plucked for rep teams.

There is a serious lack of goaltending across all levels.

Goalies should be offered a deep discount to sign up. Would help offset some of the costs you need for the equipment.

HC needs a First Shift for goalies.

Also need a better solution for rep teams all wanting 2 goalies. Backup playing 20-30% isn’t good for kids. I get AAA but at AA and A I’d love to see teams just roster one and make callups easier. Lower levels like house league struggling to just roster goalies for all teams.

That would disrupt too many teams when you ALL play weekends.

LOL Sounds like another reason why OHF and HC suck... Sorry thats happening. If you have a goalie kid, move them to KSL - better opportunities for things like this. Also, the full size net from a young age is great development.

Almost every team I know of does 50/50 for regular season games and round robin tournament games. Tournament finals and playoffs are a different story.

If any team is doing something different. Move on to another team. Thats garbage. Even AAA teams that I know of do not do that BS.

This is a great idea, I bet so many kids would play goalie if there were incentives

I'm seeing way too many inexperienced goalies moving from HL after 1 year to rep. I know 3 goalies who have done this and know of another who never played goalie before and is on a BB team.

There is not an abundance of goalies in my area and HL is doing nothing to develop and keep their goalies. If you have the opportunity and the means to do so, why wouldn't you play rep?

Most smaller teams in my area are lucky to have one goalie never-mind two.
