That's unfortunate, if true. Breaking commitments at the last minute is very selfish and affects the entire team you are leaving. I realize coaches do this also but it's nice when someone gives their word and sticks to it. If you are ditching out a few days before tryouts then you aren't conducting yourself in a good way. If something happened then that's different but if you are just reaching for a few more wins then you need to do better and you are likely a douche.
Happens all the time and being a douche is OK. Look at HVS.

As much as I hate the Caps I can admit it wasn’t the GT caps team lol… was a few of them playing with select/house league friends

That’s nice of the Flamingos coach to let them Caps boys play ‘up’ this weekend. Gives them a taste of competitive hockey.
